Hello, World!

I'm a Graduate Engineer & Consulting Software Developer based in Brisbane, Australia. I enjoy developing complex, cloud-based applications and integrating business processess through clever use of devops best practices.

I work with any size team or business to develop custom applications, data pipelines and workflows in order to integrate external tools into a single environment. I help businessess streamline their data collection and storage infrastructure, outsource their infrastructure requirements to the cloud, and automate most of the process for them. I strive to develop robust solutions in Python using open-source technologies like Django and Flask which have extensive development and a well established community.

As a qualified engineer, I strive to provide a rigourous and systematic methodology to all projects I work on. This can be seen through the quality of work I provide, not just as a developer, but through the documentation and systems I provide alongside the software I develop. I have adopted the agile project management methodology, and tend to work with an iterative, continuous development and deployment pattern.

I leverage the raw computing power and managed infrastructure of Amazon Web Services to give my clients access and insight into their data. I have embraced the serverless approach to quickly implement applications independent of their physical architecture, allowing businesses to launch new product ideas quicker, and without the expensive overhead typical of launching production ready applications and pipelines.

How can I help build value for your business?

As a Consulting Developer at Idea 11, my role is to provide our customers with development and consulting services for various cloud-based projects. I have completed many types of projects during my employment:

  • developed automated deployment methodologies for production ready, highly available WordPress stacks;
  • implemented robust, serverless, production-ready data ingestion pipelines with monitoring;

  • and helped refactor old code-bases to implement new business opportunities

Web Application Development @ Flight Data Systems

January 2017 - November 2018

At the beginning of 2017 I was contracted by Flight Data Systems to develop a platform to manage and collaborate on risk management plans for UAVs. The application runs on a Django backend, exposed by a REST API. The front-end was developed from a template source. In the end the project was chosen to not be pursued by the Flight Data Systems parent company, but this project was an excellent learning experience.

Vacation Research Assistant @ QUT

Summer 2014 & Summer 2015

During the summer break in 2014 I participated in the Vacation Research Experience Scheme at QUT, working under Associate Professor Ben Upcroft. I spent the summer doing research about neural networks and their usage in unsupervised learning problems. The title of my research was Implementing DeepMind in Caffe - Deep Learning for Atari 2600 Games.

During the summer break of 2015 I was offered a position as a Vacation Research Assistant, working under Associate Professor Michael Milford. My research project was titled: Cheap Camera-based Road Defect Detection. A video of the results can be found here: https://youtu.be/_jIp_kbOB6s

Sessional Academic | Head Tutor @ QUT

Feb 2014 - July 2018

In semester 1, 2014 I was offered a position to tutor CAB202 Microproccessors and Digital Systems. I teach a weekly class of 25 students the basics of C and its use in microcontrollers. During semester 2, 2016 I was offered a leadership position within CAB202 as head tutor. My responsibilities as head tutor included: managing administration and issues of tutors, handling issues with students marks, developing content for tutorials, and running weekly meetings with teaching staff.

Web Developing Contractor @ contractor

August 2012 - Present

I started my contracting career in Brisbane in August 2012 when I was contracted to work for local business owner Toni-Maree Bishop. My job was to maintain, develop, and deploy her five businesses websites and provide my experience in many technical aspects of the businesses, such as business data aquisition (for BI purposes) and internet marketing. Between 2012 and 2014 I had re-deployed the main company website (elaundry), launched two new business websites, and developed a data visualisation dashboard for Toni-Maree's businesses.

I have also maintained a steady working relationship (to present) with a handful of small businesses in the East Brisbane area. I provide value to Marcus Collings of SASSOM Fitness in East Brisbane by helping maintain and extend his WordPress website, and to Dan Walker of Zen Natural Beds in the same way. I strive to provide the same level of engineering quality for a cost which these very small businesses can justify. These clients have also referred me further work which allowed me to live more comfortably during off times at university.
